It has been shown that carrying out HIV tests in conjunction with consultant activities, it’s one of the best strategy that can be used for both the prevention and the cure of HIV/AIDS. Moreover, once aware of their positive or negative status people are more likely to adopt the adequate precautions to avoid the infection.
Starting from 2014, Peace Now and Dero Farmers Association with the support of the Karin Health Center and the NGO Comboni Samaritan of Gulu, have organized many HIV test campaigns, accompanying this activity with the distribution of treatments against intestinal worms for children under five.
The activities took place in the Sub County of Patiko, north of Gulu, Uganda, an area particularly hit by poverty and violence because of a twenty years-war in the country. Given the condition of strong promiscuity in refugees camps, the dissemination of the virus is very high in those war-affected areas.
Thanks to the co-organization of football competitions and tests, it was possible to mobilize a large number of young people unaware of the power of information as a strong tool to prevent the disease.
Resume of the carried out campaigns until now:
- 27-31 January 2014: 595 HIV tests carried out and 1122 treatments against intestinal worms distributed - Organization of football tournament as mobilization strategy
- 7-11 July 2014: 707 HIV tests carried out and 2194 treatments against intestinal worms distributed - sensitization campaigns in schools
- 15-19 December 2014: 700 HIV tests carried out and about 1000 treatments against intestinal worms distributed - Organization of football tournament as mobilization strategy
- 18-22 August 2015: 700 HIV tests carried out and about 1000 treatments against intestinal worms distributed, in conjunction with hepatitis tests
- 21-23 December 2015: 700 HIV tests carried out and about 1000 treatments against intestinal worms distributed - Organization of football tournament as mobilization strategy
- 18-22 December 2017: 673 HIV tests, 366 malaria tests carried out and 1370 treatments against intestinal worms distributed - Organization of football tournament as mobilization strategy
- 17-22 December 2018: 641 HIV tests, 455 malaria tests, 156 Diabetes tests carried out and 744 treatments against intestinal worms distributed – Organization of football and netball tournament as mobilization strategy
The project brought together the economic development with the improvement of the local health care system; it also improved the awareness of associations, local population and the Ugandan public opinion responsibility on the importance of medical prevention.
